The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 needs your support! – by Rebecca Mayer

Remember the cancer-causing tea tree shampoo from the Bag It Toxins Shock post?  New legislation introduced this summer aims to safeguard ingredients in our products.  Up until now, due to a 1938 law, the FDA has had no regulatory control over ingredients linked to cancer, birth defects and a health hazards associated with a host of other unregulated chemicals.

The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 changes all this.  If passed, everyone who uses soap, sunscreen or shampoo will be protected by governmental regulation.  This means you (unless you prefer the scruffy unwashed smelly thing.)

For example, under current law, if you happen to try a product with toxic levels of mercury, found in skin whitening creams, the FDA is powerless to recall the product or educate you about its risks.

What can you do to help pass this essential bill?  Great question!  Here are some easy actions you can take:

1.  Ask your US Representative to support the Safe Cosmetics Act!

2.  Watch the Story of Cosmetics and share it with everyone you know.
