Who Inspires You? by Rebecca Mayer

Here is a company we are really excited about – B Corporation’s PRESERVE.  Have you heard of these guys?  They turn used Stonyfield yogurt containers into toothbrushes and create tableware from discarded take-out containers.

This company takes the “re-use” concept seriously, and inspires us to do the same.  According to its mission statement, “Preserve seeks to catalyze change in how society uses earth’s resources. By designing products and closed-loop recycling systems, Preserve aims to influence behavior to support a shift towards a more sustainable society.”

Go to Preserve’s website to learn more.

According to this article by Katie Kerr, Preserve bases their work around the Gimme 5 program. Gimme 5 donation bins are located at Whole Foods and co-ops across the nation to collect any type 5 recyclable plastics. These include yogurt cups, Brita parts, and plastics from Toms of Maine products. The company then melts them down to make their products.

The company aims even higher than their closed-loop recycling plan, seeking to change production and waste management at a national corporate level.  Find out how to Become a B-Corp here.

What companies impress you?  Who makes a difference and inspires you to do the same?

I just watched “Bag It” for the first time. One thing I noticed right off was that the people who are against the use of plastic are using it in ways that are unnecessary. For example, the lady who stopped using plastic; instead, she reuses glass bottles, etc. When she’s sitting in her chair talking about “upping her game”, you can easily see a large plastic “bin” or storage container right behind her chair. Why not a cardboard box?
