In this spirit, Producer Michelle Hill sent me a link to a Fast Company article about fungi discovered in the Amazon that will eat your plastic.
We don’t know if this fungi will then mutate and take over the earth in some kind of plant/plastic hybrid sci-fi type situation, or what happens to the chemical components of the plastic once they are absorbed, or whether this phenomenon is even true at all, because we have not seen it ourselves.
Until we do see this marvelous mushroom in action, we stick to our fundamental message: consume less; use less plastic, and when you do, re-use it as many times as possible and then recycle it as well as you know how.
We’ll keep you posted on the availability of magical plastic-eating mushrooms. And if anyone would like to fund a study, I would be happy to travel to the Amazon and report on the process firsthand!
